Violence Prevention Education Team
Violence Prevention Educators (VPE) are students who receive 30 hours of training to provide consistent, thorough information about relationship violence, sexual violence, stalking, and related topics to the Auraria community. VPEs are involved in the design of prevention and education programs and their implementation. VPEs actively engage in campus awareness activities, classroom presentations, and educational presentations.
The VPE position is primarily a work-study or academic internship position, running from August to May.
Helpline Advocates are trained to provide advocacy, crisis intervention, information, and referrals to the Auraria campus community regarding issues of relationship violence, sexual violence, and stalking. Advocates handle a wide variety of calls that may include:
- providing a listening ear and emotional support to callers
- explaining the criminal justice process
- discussing options with a survivor
- directing callers to resources on-campus or in the community
- educating callers about interpersonal violence
- assisting family and friends in developing skills to help support a loved one who has experienced violence
- and more!
Advocates are provided with an on-call cell phone, which they carry for 4 day long shifts. Students, staff, faculty and community members are eligible for this volunteer position and students can use this as an internship experience.
Volunteers attend a 32 hour training which certifies the as advocates according to Colorado law.
The PCA hosts two to three MSW interns each academic year. These interns gain a variety of skills and experiences serving on the VPE team, the Helpline team, and maintaining a moderate client caseload.
